“When I am despondent, I dream of Paris.
When I am content, I dream of being in Paris, in love.” – Barbara-jo
McIntosh
A single woman of ‘a certain age’, author
Barbara-jo McIntosh invites the reader to join her in realizing a
long-time dream of spending one month in Paris – living as a true
Parisienne.
Barbara-jo opens her heart – and
appetite, to all the city has to offer. She takes us along as she
explores her little neighbourhood – a pocket of Paris offering a
treasure trove of bistros, shops, markets and culinary haunts. She takes
us to her favourite cafés and restaurants where we share in her
delight, and the occasional letdowns. Then she whisks us home to her
flat where she recreates her own variations of ‘tous les jours
spéciaux’. As Barbara-jo shares her table with old friends and new, she
rediscovers that cooking can be both celebration and solace.
The dishes Barbara-jo shares with us in Cooking
for Me and Sometimes You are based on her own philosophy of
‘elegant sufficiency’. All are simple recipes prepared with little fuss
and readily available ingredients.

An enticing collection of recipes from our oceans, rivers and lakes finds form in a stunning coffee table book. Featuring recipes crafted by internationally renown chefs from fourteen different countries including Alain Roux, Alice Waters, Rick Stein and Vancouver’s own David Hawksworth, with a poignant forward by Heston Blumenthal, A Boy After the Sea is a worthy addition to any food lover’s library.
