Maynard, Adventures of a Bacon Curer
By Maynard Davies

Any foodie worth his or her salt must read Maynard, Adventures of a Bacon Curer, one of the most delightful books to come along in an age. In addition to it being touted as “the cult book of the year”, it’s a completely terrific read on its own.

Our hero, Englishman Maynard Davies, is dyslexic and so enlisted his supportive wife Trisha to transcribe the book. That she comes off most favourably, is more the result of her faithful transcription of her husband’s words, and not altering his heartfelt, simple goodness. It’s a grand read and a feel good one too. It’s gratifying to know that the Maynards of the world, the straight arrow, hardworking little guys do triumph in their own measured ways.

If you’re looking for a cookbook, this isn’t one although there are plenty of recipes for bulk bacon making and ham curing. Instead you’ll follow the very human adventures of Maynard in his quest to learn and make the very best cured pork with skills and recipes handed down from old timers. Tossed into the mix are a few ever-so handy remedies for things like getting rid of rats or how to get a ewe to accept an orphaned lamb. Best of all, Maynard’s simple pride, and honesty shine in every word on every page.

We need more Maynards in this world. More excellent bacon too.
